Join us for a special screening of Stars of Orion: Japanese Martyrs for Palestine (2012) by director and journalist May Shigenobu. This rarely shown documentary traces the story of the Japanese Red Army (JRA) and their solidarity with the Palestinian armed struggle in the 1970s with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
Through interviews, archival footage, and personal insight, May Shigenobu – the daughter of Japanese Red Army founder and former leader Fusako Shigenobu – weaves a story of militant solidarity, anti-imperialist resistance, and shared struggle against colonialism, zionism, and US domination. Fusako was freed in 2022 after serving a 20-year sentence in Japan.
Following the screening, we’ll be joined in a live link-up with filmmaker May Shigenobu for a conversation to discuss the film, its political context, and the ties between struggles for liberation across Asia, the Arab world, and beyond.
Tickets $10 – donated to Medical Aid for Palestine
