The skate deck is a recurring theme in Safa's artworks because Safa has lost her license 3 times. Without a car Safa took up skating to get to and from the train station quickly, due to the lack of good public transport options where she lives in Naarm/Melbourne.
Most recently Safa lost her license due to fines, because she was spending so much time on the road, driving between Naarm & Geelong to visit her partner Youssef, who was studying at uni down there. At the conclusion of his degree, Youssef had to leave Australia.
The skateboard works in this solo exhibition are 'dedicated to everyone separated from their loved ones by a suspended license, a pending visa, or an unending war.'
