Inspired by ancient Nymphaeums (monuments to water spirits) and principles of garden design, ‘Ruins’ attempts to reconstruct a water garden inside an apartment.
Combining the two artist's disciplines of ceramics and horticulture, vessels have been created for a variety of mosses and Taro that have been planted in Suite 7a.
References to plants that grow in the Pacific Islands, and methods of construction used in the Cook Islands, such as the use of coralite building blocks, reflect Paris’ interest in Pacific crops and building materials.
The ceramic pieces reflect Jana’s ongoing interest in classical sculpture, relics and material decay. Drawing inspiration from artworks by Margel and Frank Hinder - the artist's paternal great-grandparents - a ceramic sun and moon act as guardians for the space.
