M.avromati is the product of generational textile handicrafts, taking on the therapeutic practice of knitting while playing with concepts of gender, queer ecologies and collective memory. Mavromati seeks to create an alternative reality that draws on the lives of fantastical marine creatures and the abundance of experiences we share.
Made on unceded Wurundjeri Country in Naarm/Melbourne. The watery ladders of the Seaweed Tanks mirror the organic movement of seaweed underwater. Each tank evokes colours of different marine creatures, with ladders reflecting the non-binary fluidity found in underwater worlds. This sense of fluidity and transformation is physically knitted into the tanks, gently stretching to fit evolving bodies.
